The Uttarakhand Floods

The Uttarakhand Floods

In 2013, a massive cloudburst led to the melting of the Chorabari glacier and the eruption of the Mandakini River, causing devastating flash floods in the state of Uttarakhand, affecting lakhs of people in 4550 villages in 13 districts. One of the worst disasters in India, the floods – accompanied with silt and rocks – caused landslides & boulder avalanche, destroying villages, bridges & roads, killing many residents, tourists and trapping lakhs of pilgrims making their annual trips to Kedarnath, Badrinath and other pilgrimages. Not only the locals, people from all over the country lost their kin. Navneet adopted two of the affected villages and supported the rehabilitation of locals who suffered major losses. As before, the focus was on enabling people to help themselves. To this end, an Owner-Driven Reconstruction program was implemented. Construction materials and aid were provided to the flood victims in the villages, allowing them to rebuild their homes.
